11/30/2017: Do YOU Know How to Boil Water? --

Ever hear the old joke that a person's cooking sucks so badly that they even burn water?  Well, in the event of an emergency or natural disaster where access to clean water no longer exists a person COULD literally boil water incorrectly... and cause illness or possibly even death.

What?  How can a person BOIL WATER incorrectly?!?!?

If you don’t have safe bottled water, you should boil water to make it safe. Boiling is the surest method to make water safer to drink by killing disease-causing organisms, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

You can improve the flat taste of boiled water by pouring it from one container to another and then allowing it to stand for a few hours, OR by adding a pinch of salt for each quart or liter of boiled water.

If the water is cloudy,

  • Filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter OR allow it to settle.
  • Draw off the clear water.
  • Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for one minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for three minutes).
  • Let the boiled water cool.
  • Store the boiled water in clean sanitized containers with tight covers.

Important Fact:  Boiling water does NOT eliminate potentially harmful contaminants like lead, or other heavy metals.  It actually has the opposite effect and causes them to become more concentrated.  If possible, using a gravity filter such as ones offered by  ProPur may be a good idea.

OK, so boiling water does take care of a lot of potentially nasty drinking water issues, but filtering that water would make that water even safer.  Whether you plan to hang out in the woods with friends or Mother Nature has impacted your family's life, gravity fed water filters require no power and do an excellent job of polishing water to make it safe for human consumption.

Below you will find various sizes of  ProPur gravity feed water filters perfect for meeting the daily water consumption needs of individuals up to small groups of up to 4 or 5 people.
